When no manual layout is specified using format, header, footer and separator %RENDERFORDISPLAY would use a table layout by default and %RENDERFOREDIT a div. Both have pros and cons with regards of screen space being used and responsiveness. Another option would be to use GridLayoutPlugin if installed to implement a middle ground: it looks like a table layout when there is enough space and collapses to a div layout on mobile devices.
