Item9250: New 1.1 Foswiki logo looks bad in IE6
Priority: Urgent
Current State: Closed
Released In: 1.1.0
Target Release: minor
Applies To: Engine
Component:
Branches:
When you look at Foswiki 1.1 as it is right now in IE6 the Foswiki logo is shown with a background different then the top bar background.
It looks awful.
It is the first thing you see when you open Foswiki 1.1 in IE6.
My company is still in the situation that only IE6 is supported and it is what is on a PC when you get it from IT department.
If we upgrade many intranet sites stop working.
A few run Firefox but most are on IE6
Foswiki has to work and look good in IE6. IE6 is something we do not get rid of until most companies have changed to Windows 7.
And that will take years. And delayed a lot by Microsoft not providing a proper replacement of tools like Netmeeting.
We have to accept this and live with it.
I have raised the issue of images with bad backgrounds 2 or 3 times before. You must test skin changes in IE6 before committing them
Release blocker because this is the first thing a manager (decision maker) sees.

Hm, I've got a Windows XP with IE8 in it. So no, you don't have to install Windows 7 to get a decent browser.
There's a natural border you can't pass given these constraints. Users simply can't expect to get the same look&feel online today using IE6.
But your point is still valid, though a PITA.
My suggestion is to ship
http://www.twinhelix.com/css/iepngfix/ with foswiki to fix this deficiency for IE6.

You cannot ask 1000s of users in a large corporation to install a path to IE6 because ...
- IT department will cry that this is not an approved update. On our computers where I work IT has pushed out (by SMS) a patch that prevents users from using Windows Upgrade because they want all computers to be at the exact same patch level so the security updates can be pushed out and always work. Some users have updated their IE6 to IE8 by some sneaky workaround but then found themselves in the situation that some vital internal websites would not work. It may sound crazy and it is crazy. We have key intranet sites where the webserver shows an error page if the browser is not IE6. That is real life in large corporations.
- The users will cry that it is Foswiki that is broken since all other websites work fine (and they are actually right)
- The internal enimies of Foswiki (I have several) will use this as a argument against Foswiki
- Many people are not admins on their computers. They cannot install such a patch.
You have to think on behalf of the end users.
The issue is a logo in the top bar. The fix is easy. If nothing else - use a GIF!
If noone else fixes this I will replace the logo with a GIF version. There is no longer any religious reasons to use png. The gif patent has long expired.
I know one of you fixed it differently last time. Why create such a fuzz around these pngs when there are simple workarounds server-side?
I believe it was
ArthurClemens. Arthur can you provide the same fix as you did last time please?

Which skin? The reason I ask is that the logo has white bg and the header bg is white as well, so I wonder what is looking bad.

PatternSkin. The only skin I test.
As I see it on my own test server.

It has a gradient as background. In IE6 it looks like this (screenshot)

I confirm the issue. I saw it in both Kenneth site and on our site.
