The late changes to icons now means that the small squares that are supposed to have the colour of the web are now icons where you in practical life cannot see the difference between the web colours.

We need these changed back to plain square block.

mmm, can you do me a favour and post a screen shot - On my systems, its an icon with a very obviously coloured background.

I'm curious to know if this is due to the gif version being broken, or if its just that there's not enough coloured background.

comparing the 2 side by side - what if I use a smaller image? I fell the plain coloured squares are not as attractive - so I'm hoping we can find a middle ground where the colour is obvious, while still having an image.

Pam tells me the folder and pencil image is too low contrast as well, so clearly I have to look for an alternative anyway - the current choices were mindnumbing to make - and were based on trying to match meanings...

here's what they look like on my system: web-icons.pngthe WEBBGCOLOR is obviously there, but not as prominent as before. the folder and pencil overlay are just too much! i hate to admit it, but probably the biggest reason i hate this "web icon" is because it makes the system look like microsoft windows!

in irc, sven mentioned the possibility of rounded corner boxes. that would probably be better than the current boxes (and certainly better than the horrid folder icons). another possibility would be to use some greyscale, very low opacity icon overlaid on the square or rounded corners. i think i would be pretty happy with rounded corner solid colors.

another idea we gassbagged, was to have a WEBICON setting - related to the on-finalised FAVICON setting - that way, rather than running out of colour choices, users can also chose to use relevant icons.

(and at that point, i need to raise a 2.0 feature request smile )

Not sure I'm real clear on all the issues here (what we want to lose, what we want to gain) but those icons all look the same to me. The differences in colour are very subtle in shading, and the colour is not a salient feature of the icon. Furthermore, an icon that doesn't convey information (It's a picture of a... what? Hmm? Oh, never mind!) isn't much worth having.

I think both Will and Sue gives the same arguments as I would give.

The icons are changing what was simple and nice to an icon that is useless representing a web. And yellow with a shade of web colour.

It does not look nice and it does not enhance readability and navigation.

The webcolour only has a chance of working when you have a reasonable surface to look at. When you have around 50 webs like we have the colours are pretty close to each other and are mainly a help for the eye to quickly find the right one on the left bar. With the icon they all look the same. The colour information is lost.

What I always liked about Arthurs pattern skin was its minimalistic clean and open design. This makes the design less nice and clean.

Why not just keep the plain simple icons as they were?

I restored the old look for this one single icon so we get a proper web list again that shows the web colour.

I also did a png version
