Item12982: New system rcs generates "rcs: warning: -V is obsolete; instead, use --version".
Priority: Normal
Current State: Closed
Released In: 2.0.3
Target Release: patch
Foswiki has been freshly installed on Fedora 20.
There a lots of warnings in the httpd log: "rcs: warning: -V is obsolete; instead, use --version"
Fedora 20 uses rcs-5.9.2-1.fc20.x86_64
See
http://www.gnu.org/software/rcs/manual/html_node/Misc-common-options.html#Misc-common-options
-V : "Behave like --version, i.e., display command version information and exit successfully. NB: This option is obsolete and its support will be removed in some future release."
I don't see why Foswiki is interested in the RCS version though.
Could it be that this is a mangled attempt at passing
-Vn: "n specifies the RCS (major) version to emulate. Valid values for n are: 3, 4, 5. Version 5 is the current version, so -V5 does nothing special."

I believe that this only happens when bin/configure is used. It checks the RCS version for reporting purposes, and to verify that the right executable has been selected in the configuration.
1.2.x is doing this as well, Not sure what a good solution will be given the wide range of installed software in the wild.
