This is an item that collects changes to the configure interface discussed at the camp. For practicality I'll fill in the changes as they are made, even if that goes against the idea of tasks a bit; if it helps, everyone here pretty much agrees on what changes should be made.

UI structural changes:
  • Move all the widgets from the bottom to the top; this makes them much easier to spot and also prevents subtle layout issues which are much more likely at the bottom of the viewport.
  • Add images to the buttons as visual cues, and add the usual colour cues to the save/discard buttons
  • Get rid of the autocheck visual cue (the eye symbol) – this information is not terribly relevant for users. They'll see whether the field is auto-validated once they actually change it.

Changes in content:
  • Get rid of the legend on the welcome page as the symbols are fairly self-explanatory – we can add it back in in a more condensed form if there are any serious complaints
  • Rewrite the remaining welcome message to be slightly more friendly and much less verbose

Other:
  • First-time experience: reduce UI to the essentials by removing: error/unsaved summary from top and detailed list of warnings, navigation tabs, some reliably guessable settings. Show setting descriptions by default. This reduces the first-time setup to five settings and lets the user see immediately what's what.

Consider this now closed since the UI has been completely reworked.
