Currently the extension installer doesn't have any access to the configuration. It probably ought to disable the extension, remove the custom settings, and back them all up so that if the extension is restored, there is a way to recover the settings. Also, installation could have an option to enable the extension, but that should probably be optional because there may be configuration settings that should be modified prior to enabling the extension.
