This question about Using an extension: Answered

Is MetaCommentPlugin basically functional?

I would like to use a comment plugin that does not require the commenter to have edit permission on a topic.

Is MetaCommentPlugin the only way to do this?

Is MetaCommentPlugin in a working state? I installed/ran configure, but

%METACOMMENT{}%

is just rendered as-is.

any help/advice appreciated!
You can tell the standard CommentPlugin to write comments to a different topic (read the doc)

MetaCommentPlugin is not in a fit state to use, AFAICT.

Just to add a bit to Crawford's comment, a setup I have often used is to create a separate comment topic with different permissions and then include that in the primary topic. Have the CommentPlugin template post the comments to the comment topic and then redirect back to the primary topic. This is simple and works nicely.

Thanks to both!

MetaCommentPlugin is used on production sites and works just fine.

Three things:
  • The documentation speaks of %METACOMMENT macro, it is actually %METACOMMENTS.
  • %METACOMMENTS% doesn't expand to anything by default. I've lacked time to track this down
  • Critically, the documentation neglects to mention the easiest way for people to use this, who are not using NatSkin -
       * Set SKIN = comments,pattern
    for example, in Main.SitePreferences

I am embarrassed to say that I noticed these things a while ago, but forgot to file any tasks. Doing so now.
